Decisions: deciding to make up our minds

How are you with decision making?

Are you a person who make decisions quite fast, or do you need more time to consider the matter, or do you remain undecided for a long time?

Some people when they get around to making their decision find that they are too late and have missed an opportunity. They then regret at not being able to make their decision earlier. Not being able to decide and putting off making decisions could well be a pattern of behaviour over time.

Some people after making a choice, regret their decisions soon after that. They may not do anything about it and continue to worry and regret, or they may change their mind and do something to reverse their decision. When they decide to change their mind, and it affects other people they sometimes find that others become upset with them. This becomes a negative cycle.

People who want to make the right decision are often confused by the many options presented to them. To clear their doubts they may ask the opinions of their family and their friends. More complications emerge. Family and friends with well intentions may persuade them to an option they think is best and may not give them a balanced view of all the options presented. They have their own reasons for their persuasion, but its best to think that they are will intended.

At times, there are many options to decide upon and it leaves us in a bind. Do we follow the advise of our family or our friends? How do we choose one over the other?

Here are some questions we can ask ourselves before making a decision:

1. What do I want or intend to achieve with this decision?
2. Is this decision for myself, my future or for others?
3. If I make this decision, how will I benefit or be affected by it?
4. If I make this decision, who will benefit from it and who will be affected by it?
5. Do I have the resources (people who can support me, finances, tools) to carry out this decision? If not, how can I get these resources? If I cannot obtain these resources, can this decision be put off until I can have these resources?
6. What are my feelings about each option / choice before me?
7. How will I feel if I made the choice?
8. What can I possibly regret if I pick one option over another? List down the advantages and disadvantages for each option.
9. What are my commitments after I make the decision?

In a complex world, making good decisions are difficult. There are many considerations as presented by the questions above. What is important is that we understand ourselves and our needs and then we find that we can make a holistic decision that we can be more satisfied with. We can decide to make up our minds.
